The Champion Sundial: Time Management That Actually Works

But here is the uncomfortable truth I open with in my workshops, and the truth I wrote about in my book The Winning Edge, The Champion Mindset — you are not short of time. You have exactly as many hours as every champion who ever lived. What you are short of is a system for spending those hours. I call that system the Champion Sundial. The sundial is an old idea, but it captures a modern problem: time only moves in one direction, and the shadow never waits for you to catch up. Time is the scarcest resource you own. It is perishable — an unused hour cannot be saved for tomorrow. It is inelastic — no matter how important you are, the day will not stretch past twenty-four hours. And it is non-substitutable — you cannot trade money, talent or effort for a single extra minute once it is gone. So the question is not how to find more time. The question is how to become more effective with the time you already hold. That is what this article is about, and it is the discipline I have watched separate the champions from the busy. Effectiveness Is Useful Time Divided by Total Time In my sessions I write one small equation on the board, and it changes how people see their whole working week: Effectiveness = useful time / total time = (total time − wasted time) / total time. Read it slowly. Your effectiveness is not measured by how many hours you sit at your desk. It is measured by what fraction of those hours actually moved your goals forward. A manager who works twelve hours and wastes seven is less effective than one who works eight hours and wastes one. The champion does not win by adding hours to the top of that fraction. The champion wins by removing the wasted hours from the numerator. Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem.
