What is the one sentence you say about yourself that quietly decides the size of your life? "I am not good with numbers." "I freeze in front of an audience." "People like me do not start businesses." We say these lines so often that we stop hearing them. But they are not facts. They are beliefs, and a belief is only as strong as the evidence holding it up. In my book The Winning Edge, The Champion Mindset, I devote a large part to the mechanism of human behaviour, what Tony Robbins in Awaken the Giant Within calls the Master System. One of its five elements is belief, and once you understand how a belief is actually built, you stop being its prisoner. You learn to take it apart, piece by piece, the same way it was assembled. This article is about that one skill, breaking a limiting belief by questioning the references behind it. Master this, and you change what you focus on, what you make things mean, and what you do, the three decisions Robbins says control your destiny. What a Belief Really Is Most people treat a belief as the truth. It is not. A belief is simply a sense of certainty. When you feel certain that something is true about you or the world, you call it a belief, and then you live as if it were a law of nature. In my workshops I use the picture Robbins gives, and it changes how people see themselves in a single moment. Imagine a tabletop with no legs. That flat top is an idea, "I am a poor public speaker." On its own, an idea floats. It has no power. Now imagine legs going under that tabletop to hold it up. Each leg is a reference, a memory or an experience. The day your voice shook in the school assembly. The colleague who smirked during your presentation. The one client meeting that went badly. Pile up enough legs and the idea becomes a sturdy table you sit on every day. That is a belief. A belief is a sense of certainty. The tabletop is the idea, the legs are the references, and a belief …
