"He is so gifted." "She is a born natural." It sounds like praise. In truth, it is one of the most expensive lies we keep telling ourselves and our children. I devoted an entire chapter to this in my first book, The Winning Edge — The Champion's Mindset , because this one misconception has quietly destroyed more potential in India than any shortage of opportunity ever has. Here is the tool I trust most for genuine mastery in any field: deliberate practice . The myth that quietly limits you We are taught that talent is a gift from God — something you are either born with or not. So the moment we see a brilliant performance, we file it away under "talent," especially in music, chess, mathematics and public speaking. It feels generous. It is actually a limiting belief in disguise, because if greatness is a gift, then those of us who were not "gifted" have a permanent excuse to stay ordinary. Modern cognitive research demolishes this idea. The brain's capacity is expandable . New skills can be built at almost any age. The real difference between an expert and an ordinary adult is not a divine spark — it is, as psychologist K. Anders Ericsson put it, "a life-long period of deliberate effort to improve performance." "The key factor separating geniuses from the merely accomplished is not a divine spark. It's not I.Q. ...
