It sounds simple, but once you truly understand it — and especially once you learn how optimistic and pessimistic thinkers use it differently — your relationship with failure changes permanently. In this article I want to walk you through the science, the stories and the practical tools that make this triad come alive for working professionals, managers, business owners and students across India. Because bouncing back is not a gift you are born with. It is a skill you can learn. The 1988 Seoul Olympics and a Lesson in Optimism Let me start with a story that stopped me in my tracks when I first read it. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, American swimmer Matt Biondi was considered a near-certain winner of seven gold medals. He lost his very first race. He then lost his second race too. The commentators wrote him off. His momentum seemed shattered. But Biondi went on to win five gold medals in that very same Games. What explains that? The answer lies in the research of psychologist Martin Seligman. Six months before the Seoul Olympics, Seligman had conducted an experiment with elite swimmers. He gave each swimmer false negative feedback after a timed trial, telling them they had swum slower than they actually had. He then asked them to swim again immediately.
