I hear it in every workshop I run. The truth is uncomfortable but freeing once you accept it. The problem is rarely a shortage of hours. The problem is that those hours arrive in broken little pieces, ten minutes here, seven minutes there, each one interrupted before any real thinking can begin. In my book The Winning Edge, The Champion Mindset , I devote an entire chapter to time, because time is the one resource a champion can never buy back. It is the scarcest resource we own. It is perishable, it cannot be stored. It is inelastic, you cannot stretch a day past twenty-four hours. And it is non-substitutable, nothing else can take its place. Everything important in your career and life is done inside time, and yet most of us treat it as if it were endless. This article is about one specific, practical habit that changed how my clients and I work: consolidating scattered time into undisturbed 90-minute blocks of deep work. It is the closest thing I have found to a productivity superpower, and the science behind it is simply our own attention span. Why Time Is Your Most Precious Resource Before we talk about the 90-minute block, you have to feel the weight of what time actually is. As Alan Lakein put it, time equals life. When you waste your time, you are not wasting some abstract commodity, you are spending your life. Time equals life. Therefore, waste your time and waste your life, or master your time and master your life. The choice is that simple. I often measure a professional's day using one honest equation. Effectiveness is useful time divided by total time. Put differently, it is total time minus wasted time, divided by total time. If you work ten hours but four of them dissolve into interruptions, status-chasing and re-reading the same email, your effectiveness is sixty percent on a generous day.
