His marriage was in serious trouble. His business had slowed to a crawl. He was carrying both crises simultaneously, in silence, trying to appear fine to the world. I found out from a mutual friend. And I did something that most people would call impractical, maybe even unnecessary. I got in my car and drove 350 km — one way — to be with him. I talk about this journey in Chapter 6 of my book The Winning Edge, The Champion Mindset , because what happened over the next 24 hours became one of the most important lessons I have ever received about communication — not from a textbook, not from a seminar, but from sitting across a dining table in a quiet house and doing almost nothing at all. The lesson is so counterintuitive that when I share it in my corporate training workshops, it consistently stops people in their tracks. So let me take you there. The Drive, the Door, and What I Decided Before I Walked In On that 350 km drive, I had plenty of time to think. I thought about what I would say. I drafted opening lines in my head. I rehearsed stories from my own life that might comfort him. I prepared a gentle list of practical questions that might help him get clarity. I was, in other words, preparing to be a very good advice-giver. Then, about 50 km from his house, something shifted in me. I thought: What does he actually need right now? Not what would make me feel useful. Not what would make the conversation feel productive. What does he need? The answer arrived quietly. He does not need my advice. He needs to be heard. I put away the mental script. I decided that I would not give advice unless specifically asked. I would not share my own parallel experiences. I would not solve anything.
