Four words. Written roughly 2,400 years ago. And in all my years of studying leadership, running corporate training programmes across Pune, Mumbai and Maharashtra, and writing my book The Winning Edge, The Champion Mindset , I have never come across a more powerful instruction for any professional who wants to grow: "Know Thyself." When I dedicated an entire chapter of The Winning Edge to emotional intelligence, I opened it with this very phrase — attributed to the ancient Greek philosophers, including Aristotle, who made it the cornerstone of his philosophy. My reason was simple: before you can master any skill — leadership, communication, sales, team-building — you must first master the person who is doing those things. That person is you. And most of us, despite our degrees and designations, have never been formally taught how to understand ourselves. What is remarkable is that in 1995, when psychologist Daniel Goleman published his landmark research on emotional intelligence, he essentially proved what Aristotle had said in 400 BC. The first, most fundamental competency of emotional intelligence is self-awareness — the ability to recognise your own emotions as they are happening. Aristotle called it "Know Thyself." Goleman called it the foundation of EQ. They were saying exactly the same thing, separated by twenty-four centuries. In this article I want to walk you through what this means for you as an Indian professional, a manager, a business owner, or a student navigating a demanding world in 2026.
