Self-Awareness: The Foundation of Emotional Intelligence

His technical work was flawless. Yet he could not read a room, could not hold his temper in a review meeting, and could not see how his own moods landed on the people around him. He was hired for his technical skills, but he was very nearly fired for his emotional ones. That single phrase has stayed with me for years, and it sits at the heart of what I teach in my book, The Winning Edge, The Champion Mindset. In my workshops across Pune, Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra, I tell professionals a simple truth that surprises them: your career rarely stalls because you do not know enough. It stalls because you do not know yourself. Emotional intelligence, or EQ, is the ability to manage and use emotions in yourself and in others, and the entire structure rests on one ground floor. That ground floor is self-awareness. This article is my invitation to begin building that foundation. Get self-awareness right, and every other emotional skill becomes possible. Skip it, and you are decorating a house with no base. Why You Are Hired for Technical Skills but Fired for Emotional Ones When I open a corporate training session, I ask the room a question. How many of you got your job because of your degree, your marks, your technical command? Almost every hand goes up. Then I ask the harder question. How many of you have seen a talented colleague held back, sidelined or removed not because of their work, but because of how they handled people, pressure and themselves? The hands go up again, slower this time, because now it is personal. Daniel Goleman, who brought emotional intelligence into the mainstream, described EQ as a set of competencies that decide how well we manage ourselves and our relationships. In my framework I call it the Champion pyramid of emotions at the workplace, and it has five steps that build on one another. Self-Awareness , knowing your moods as they happen.
