The best salespeople I know are not the ones who talk the most. They are the ones who listen the most, and who keep coming back after a no. In my book The Winning Edge, The Champion Mindset , I call listening the champion learning and observing tool. It is the single most underrated skill in selling. When you truly listen, you build the relationship, you discover the real need, you solve the customer problem, and very often you heal something the customer did not even know was bothering them. Talk less, sell more is not a slogan. It is a discipline. This article is for the salesperson who is tired of being out-talked by their own pitch. Why Listening Outsells Talking Selling is not a monologue you perform at a customer. It is a relationship you build with them. And relationships are not built by the person doing the talking. I had a friend, K.K., who had the most magnetic friendships I have ever seen. People were drawn to him, opened up to him, trusted him within minutes. For a long time I could not work out his secret. When I finally did, it changed how I sell and how I teach selling. The two phases of a champion conversation K.K. did two simple things. First, he started every conversation on the other person topic of interest, not his own, and he asked questions about it.
