The first professional hire and the six-month cliff

A pattern repeats across this economy often enough to plan for. A promoter-led firm hires its first genuinely senior professional, pays well above what it has ever paid, and gives him a title with real scope on paper. For five months everyone is delighted. Around month six something quietly goes wrong, and both sides describe it in the same two words. He is not fitting in.

Look closer and it is almost never about capability: the new man made a decision inside his stated scope and inside the authority he had been given in writing. Somebody long-serving went directly to the promoter about it. The promoter, meaning no harm, adjusted the decision in a corridor conversation. Nothing was said to anyone. But the organisation observed all of it, and from that day the professional's instructions carry an asterisk that nobody in the firm will ever admit to putting there.
