Botad is one of Gujarat's youngest districts and one of its plainest economies. Cotton and groundnut on the fields. Ginning and pressing units working the season. Mandi trade in Botad town and Gadhada, and dairy routes through the villages. Two quieter currents add to it. Diamond job-work units operate here on the Bhavnagar-Surat axis, part of Saurashtra's long relationship with the polishing wheel. Firms here are family-run and lean. An owner, a munim, working supervisors. The management questions are correspondingly direct: how to run seasonal labour fairly, how to collect without burning relationships, how to hand real authority to the next generation.

The dominance of cotton is not a figure of speech: it takes something like nine-tenths of the district's cropped land, with sesame a distant second. Industry is slight. The Botad GIDC estate runs to about six hectares and four dozen plots, all of them allotted, so the organisations with real payrolls are the trading houses, the gins and the banks. The Bhavnagar district cooperative bank alone works around twenty-five branches here, one of them inside the marketing yard itself.

The ginning season governs a Botad year. For a few months the yards run day and night. The weighbridge and the moisture reading become the two most argued-about facts in the district, and every dispute has to be settled fast because a queue of tractors will not wait. Then it stops. The same firms fall quiet enough for an owner to notice how much of the operation lives nowhere but in his own head.

A pooled working day, built for Botad's scale

The sensible format for a district like this is one strong visiting day, shared. Gin and mill supervisors, diamond unit in-charges, dealership and trading-house managers, pooled into a single Hindi-language cohort working on delegation, staff handling and customer conversations. The way through is to fix the day off the ginning calendar rather than the diary, announce it early, and accept that one firm will send two people instead of four. A cohort of twelve who turned up beats a cohort of twenty who were promised.
