Cotton by the lakh hectare, chilli by the truckload

Khargone plants cotton across roughly two hundred and fifteen thousand hectares. That is the largest cotton area of any district in Madhya Pradesh, and enough to make this one of the most serious single cotton tracts in the country. The kapas comes off the Nimar plain into ginning and pressing yards whose bales leave for spinning mills far outside the state, and the district's cotton-processing units in both the cooperative and private sectors give the trade a spine most agricultural districts never build. Chilli runs alongside as the second cash crop. The yard at Bedia near Sanawad is one of the biggest red-chilli markets in the country, with the drying floors, graders and commission agents that follow a crop sold on colour and pungency.

Underneath both is the Narmada and the black soil of the Nimar valley. Around them sits the ordinary machinery of an agri-economy at scale: soybean and pulses, sugar units, warehouses, input dealerships, transporters, and the cooperative societies and bank branches through which a cash-crop district's money actually moves.

Two other Khargones matter. Maheshwar, Ahilyabai Holkar's capital on the Narmada, weaves the Maheshwari saree, a cotton-and-silk cloth carrying a geographical indication since 2010, made largely on pit looms in family workshops, and now a craft economy with buyers, visitors and design orders arriving from well outside the district. And the industrial areas at Nimrani, Badwah, Padli and Bhikangaon hold the district's manufacturing, a handful of medium and large units among many thousands of small ones. Khargone also generates power at scale, because the ultra-supercritical station at Selda near Sanawad, the first of its kind commissioned in India, runs two units of 660 megawatts. The district's fields carry one of the largest installed solar capacities of any district in the state.
