The Dang: Gujarat's forest district

Ahwa is the headquarters of the Dang, the most forested district in Gujarat. These are teak and bamboo hills where the working economy is agriculture on small terraced holdings, minor forest produce, and the public systems that employ most of the district's salaried people: forest department, schools, health services, panchayat administration. Saputara, the state's one hill station, adds a tourism economy of hotels, homestays and weekend service work, and the annual Dang Darbar before Holi remains the district's great civic gathering.

An honest page says plainly: this is not an industrial market, and no trainer should pretend otherwise. The frontline that matters here is field-based and public-facing, plus the hospitality teams on the Saputara hill.

Two facts fix the scale of this place. Around seven-tenths of the district is under forest, the highest proportion of any district in Gujarat, and the industry ministry's own profile of the Dang records it as the one district in which the state industrial development corporation has never established an estate at all. Timber, charcoal and firewood are sold to merchants by auction at Waghai and Ahwa. Employers are correspondingly small and seasonal. A hotel that trebles its staff for a few months. A cooperative branch with six people on its rolls. A shed that runs when the crop comes in and sits idle after. Nobody here is hiring a training department, and nobody needs to.

Small cohorts, real practice, paired with the plains

What a visiting national trainer can usefully offer the Dang is compact and specific: service and guest-handling practice for Saputara's hotel and homestay staff before the season. Working sessions for bank, dairy and cooperative field staff on clear, respectful village-level communication. Supervisory basics for the few processing and construction operations the district hosts. Before the season opens is the only window that works

Timing decides whether hospitality training in the Dang is worth anything at all. Saputara's properties staff up shortly before the visitors arrive, which leaves a narrow stretch, after the hiring and before the rush, when a new team can be shown how the house wants guests handled and can practise it without a full lobby watching. Miss that window and the season does the teaching instead. Badly, permanently, and in habits that are far harder to correct than to form. A short mid-season refresher then protects the standard when fatigue sets in, which it reliably does.

For the district's banks, cooperatives and public-programme teams the constraint is different and the answer is the same. Numbers are small, so a pooled working day across two or three institutions is what makes a properly prepared session possible, and scheduling it alongside a nearby south Gujarat engagement keeps a Dang cohort from carrying a whole trip on its own budget. Small does not have to mean thin. Twelve or fifteen people in a room with real situations and an agreed follow-up is a better day's work than a hall of two hundred listening.

One characteristic of hill properties is worth designing around rather than complaining about. Much of the seasonal staff is new each year, so whatever a house teaches in one season leaves with the people who learned it. The only thing that carries over is the manager or the owner's family, which makes them the real cohort even when the session is nominally for the frontline. Train the person who will still be there next April and the year after, and the annual intake gets taught properly without a trainer having to climb the ghat every season.
