Thermal, hydro and a solar field that floats

No other district in Madhya Pradesh generates electricity three different ways, and Khandwa does. At Mundi, the Shree Singaji thermal station runs four units to a capacity of 2,520 megawatts, drawing cooling water from the Indira Sagar reservoir and coal by rail. At Punasa, the Indira Sagar dam on the Narmada holds the largest volume of water of any reservoir in India and generates hydro power through a joint venture between a central utility and the state. For an employer that adds up to a district full of shift-based, process-governed work. Station operators and maintenance cadres. Dam and canal staff. And thicker on the ground than either, the contractor firms doing the erection, cleaning, transport and civil work that keep a power complex running. Their supervisors carry far more daily responsibility than their training ever prepared them for, which is the single most common gap anyone who listens to this belt will hear about.

Black cotton soil and a junction facing four ways

The older Khandwa is a Nimar farm district on black cotton soil, growing cotton, soybean and wheat that move through mandis which have set this region's prices for a century. It is also a railway town of real consequence. Khandwa Junction is where the Malwa line down from Indore meets the main east–west route between Mumbai and the east, which made the city a trading and transhipment point long before any power station arrived. A station's own operators and a contractor's gang work the same equipment on the same shift, and they are not the same thing. The company man has tenure, a grade and a career. The contract hand has a month, a rate and a supervisor who answers to someone at the gate. When something needs doing at the boundary between them, the question of who may tell whom to do what has never been settled out loud.

That gap is where most of the belt's daily friction lives, and it is trainable from both sides. The company cadre works on giving direction to people who do not report to them without it becoming an order or a request, and on noticing when a contract crew has gone quiet rather than compliant. The contractor's supervisors work on holding their own crew to a standard the client set, and on raising a problem to a company officer without either apologising for it or picking a fight. Where a sponsor can put both batches in the same building on the same day, with the content aligned across them, the handover between the two stops being the weakest point of the shift.

Batches rotate around changeover so nothing stops. The township's own hall is the venue, and the examples come off the site the room walked in from.

Contractors, counters and college halls

From the trading side: counter behaviour and follow-up discipline for ginning firms, dealerships and mandi houses that have grown past the point where the proprietor can supervise everything himself. From the town: employability days for college halls, service behaviour for hospital and bank counters, teacher development for the education societies.
