He has never been trained in anything and he has never been absent for long. The firm is not run on a system; it is run on him, and the owner sleeps well because of it.

Nobody wants to hear the obvious consequence, so it is generally left unsaid until something forces it, but the point of raising it in a room rather than in a private conversation is that the man himself is usually relieved. He is carrying more than anyone acknowledges, cannot take leave without anxiety, and has watched a younger relative be groomed for a role he could do in his sleep.
