Oranges, and a textile mill at Boregaon

When Pandhurna became a district in 2023 it took the Pandhurna and Sausar tehsils out of Chhindwara, and its economy was already distinct from its parent's. This is orange country. In the Sausar belt the overwhelming majority of farmers grow oranges. The orchards, pack-houses and traders here work the same citrus economy as Nagpur across the border. Industry arrived in the 1990s when Raymond set up at Boregaon, and the AKVN industrial area around it still anchors the district's manufacturing employment alongside smaller units.

Geography does the rest. Pandhurna looks south. Nagpur is the district's real metro for markets, colleges, hospitals and jobs, and the rail line and highway to it matter more daily than the road to Bhopal. This is also Madhya Pradesh's Marathi-speaking edge. Homes here move between Marathi and Hindi without noticing.

Marathi one minute, Hindi the next

Where the crate loses its money

Almost every farmer in the Sausar belt grows oranges, and the proportion is overwhelming. The fruit moves south into Nagpur's market and its cold stores rather than north into Madhya Pradesh. That routing is the district's commercial reality and also its weak point. The margin on citrus is settled in the two days between picking and the buyer's hand: how the fruit is cut, how it is stacked, whether a crate is dropped, whether a load stands in the sun while paperwork is hunted for. Not one of those decisions is taken by anybody senior.

None of that is an agronomy problem. It is handling discipline. It belongs to the pack-house crew, the loader and the supervisor who is meant to be watching them. A day built for growers, pack-house staff and traders together pays for itself in crates that arrive intact. It runs in whatever mix of Hindi and Marathi the hall speaks. The district's newer institutions carry the other half of the demand: colleges and school societies wanting student-direction days, bank branches building their counters, and the offices of an administration that has existed only since 2023, none of which inherited a training habit.

The best classroom for that day is the pack-house floor, not a hall. Bring a stack of crates in. Let the crew pack one the way they pack it when a truck is waiting, then pack one the way it should be packed, then let the trader who buys them say which one he would pay more for. Nobody argues with a crate. The supervisor watching that demonstration was usually the quickest cutter in his row last season. He was promoted for speed, and he is now expected to correct men he worked beside. That is the real gap between a good crop and a good price, and no slide has ever closed it.
