A manager should automate routine reporting, let AI assist with drafts and analysis, and keep every people decision human. That three-way split is the whole skill. McKinsey notes Indian managers spend about 21 hours a week in meetings, and much of what surrounds those meetings, the notes, follow-ups and status reports, is exactly what AI can take off a manager's plate.

Start with work that has no judgment in it. Weekly status reports, meeting notes, action-item reminders and pulling numbers from a sheet into a summary are all good first targets. Describe the report once, let the AI build it from the same sources every week, and spend your ten minutes checking it instead of two hours building it. I run my own businesses with a set of AI agents doing this kind of routine work, and a person still reads what matters before it moves.
Where should AI only assist a manager?
Assist means AI drafts and you decide. Use it to draft a project update, summarise a long customer thread, compare vendor quotes in a table, or turn rough notes into a clear plan. Ask it to challenge your plan too: what could go wrong, what did I miss? Treat the output as a smart junior's first draft. It is fast and often useful, and it can also be confidently wrong, so check figures and facts against the source before anything leaves your desk.

What must stay human in a manager's job?
Anything that changes a person's job, pay, growth or reputation stays with you. That covers hiring decisions, appraisal ratings, warnings, promotions and difficult conversations. AI can help you prepare, but it cannot read the room, and your team will know if a message was written by a machine. Good leadership training has always been about these human moments, and AI does not change that. It only gives you more time for them.
How can a manager use AI to prepare for one-to-ones and reviews?
Before a one-to-one, ask AI to organise your own notes: what was agreed last time, what has happened since, what you want to say. Draft the feedback, then rewrite it in your own voice with real examples you saw. Never paste employee personal data, health details or salary figures into a public tool unless your company has approved it. For appraisals, use AI to check your wording for bias and vagueness, not to decide the rating.
Which AI tools suit managers in Indian companies?
Most managers need one general assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, plus Microsoft Copilot if the company already uses Outlook, Teams and Excel. A shared Notion space works well for storing prompts the team has tested. Dashboards can now be built by describing them in plain words, which helps managers who wait on a data team.
