    The honest answer Vinayak gave me: yes, but not overnight. Organic and sustainable methods lower the recurring cost of fertilizers and pesticides once soil health recovers, because healthier soil needs less external input to produce the same yield. The catch is the recovery period, soil that's been chemically farmed for years takes seasons to rebuild its natural fertility, and yields can dip before they improve. Farmers who get through that window typically see costs fall and margins improve, but they need support to survive the dip.

    Carbon Credits: A New Income Stream for Farmers

    One point from the conversation stood out: sustainable practices like cover cropping, reduced tillage and organic inputs can qualify farmers for carbon credits, effectively getting paid for the carbon their soil stores. It's a second income stream layered on top of the harvest itself, and it directly rewards the practices that also cut input costs.
