    I've sat across the table from brilliant IT professionals — people who could debug a production crash at 2 a.m. without blinking — who were quietly being sidelined at work. Not because they lost their skill. Because the skill they had stopped being the skill the market wanted, and they refused to notice.     The engineers who saw it coming — and the ones who didn't

    Over the years I've met dozens of IT professionals who spent a decade or more mastering C, C++, and Java. They weren't average performers. Many of them were the people their teams turned to when nothing else worked. They had built genuinely successful careers on these languages, and for years, that expertise was more than enough.

    Then the industry moved. Python became the default teaching language and the backbone of data work. Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data, Cloud Computing and Ethical Hacking stopped being buzzwords on conference slides and became line items in job descriptions. The shift didn't happen overnight, but it happened steadily, visibly, for anyone paying attention.

    Some professionals adapted quickly. They enrolled in courses on weekends, built small projects in the new stack, asked younger colleagues to explain things they didn't understand, and stayed relevant. It cost them pride, sometimes, to be the senior person asking a junior for help. They did it anyway.

    Others resisted. I heard the same sentence, almost word for word, from professional after professional: "I'm comfortable with Java. Why should I learn Python now? I've been doing this for fifteen years." It sounds reasonable when you say it. It sounds like self-respect. But it's the sentence that quietly ends careers.

    And slowly, without any single dramatic moment, they got left behind. The best projects stopped coming their way. The promotions went to people with half their experience but twice their current relevance. Younger professionals who had embraced the new technologies got the visibility, the trust, and eventually the corner office. The senior engineers who held their ground on the old stack found themselves explaining, in interview after interview, why their fifteen years of experience in C++ mattered more than a candidate with two years of hands-on Python and ML exposure. It was a hard sentence to make land.

    Here is the part that stayed with me most: it was never about talent. Every one of these professionals had the raw capability to learn Python in a few focused months. What they lacked wasn't intelligence — it was the willingness to be a beginner again. In an industry where something new emerges every day, adaptation isn't a nice-to-have. It's survival.

    Why we resist: the homeostasis trap

    Before blaming any individual, it helps to understand a fundamental human tendency: homeostasis. Homeostasis is your body's and mind's natural resistance to change. When you run a fever, your body fights to bring your temperature back to normal. When a rash appears, your system works to restore balance. The same instinct operates in your mind at work. Faced with change, your brain reaches for stability, predictability, and the familiar routine — even when the familiar routine is quietly becoming obsolete.

    This is why innovation feels uncomfortable. It isn't laziness. It's your mental equilibrium being disrupted, and your mind pushing back the way it would against any disturbance.

    On top of homeostasis, four other forces compound the resistance:

    Fear of failure. Innovation requires experimentation, and experimentation sometimes fails publicly. Professionals who have built a reputation on being the expert are often the most afraid of looking like a novice in front of people who used to come to them for answers.

    Comfort with the status quo. If something has worked for fifteen years, the mind asks, why change it? This question feels rational. It is also how professionals become comfortable with mediocrity without ever noticing the slide.

    Hierarchical thinking. Many employees believe innovation is the job of senior management or the R&D team — not something a regular engineer is expected to do. So they never try, and they never see themselves as someone who could contribute a new idea.

    Resistance to change itself. Learning new skills, adapting to new systems, and letting go of familiar routines is effortful. Many professionals resist simply because it disrupts comfort — not because the new thing is genuinely worse.

    None of this makes the IT professionals who fell behind bad at their jobs. It makes them human. But understanding the mechanism is the first step to overriding it.

    When a whole company faces the same dilemma: Intel's Valley of Death

    The IT Professional's Dilemma isn't only an individual problem. It plays out at company scale too, and Intel's story in the 1970s and 80s is one of the clearest examples I know.

    Intel was, at the time, the world's leading manufacturer of memory chips. Business was booming, and the company dominated its market. Then Intel's leadership noticed something troubling: sales in Japan were declining. Japanese manufacturers had stopped buying Intel's chips. At first, Intel's leadership dismissed it as a temporary slump — the same instinct that tells an individual professional "this new technology is just a fad."

    When they investigated further, the truth was harder to accept: Japanese companies were now making better, cheaper memory chips than Intel could. Intel was losing the very market it had built its identity on.

    Andrew S. Grove, who later became Intel's CEO, called this moment the "Valley of Death" — the point at which a company realises that what made it successful in the past will no longer work in the future. Intel had a choice: resist the change and slowly die, or innovate and survive. They chose to innovate. Intel made the almost unthinkable decision to stop being a memory chip company and reinvent itself as a microprocessor company. Memory chips were their identity, their history, their comfort zone. Walking away from that was a massive risk.

    By the 1980s, Intel had completed the transformation. The company became a high-tech industry leader, and the world came to know it through a new phrase: "Intel Inside." Today Intel is synonymous with innovation in computing — but only because, at the moment of crisis, its emotional capacity to face reality and adapt outweighed its attachment to what used to work.

    The lesson for any IT professional facing their own dilemma is the same one Intel learned: in moments of crisis, when the old methods stop working, your emotional capability to adapt determines whether you sink or swim. Skill alone doesn't save you. The willingness to relearn does.

    The companies that chose comfort — and the ones that didn't

    History gives us a long list of organisations that had every resource to adapt and chose comfort instead. Kodak invented the digital camera and then refused to embrace it, afraid it would cannibalise their film business — and film business collapsed anyway, taking Kodak with it. Nokia, once the undisputed leader in mobile phones, failed to take the smartphone revolution seriously until Apple and Samsung had already claimed the ground. Blockbuster refused to adapt to digital streaming while Netflix, which started life as a humble DVD-by-mail service, kept reinventing itself. Yahoo, once an internet giant, lost its position to Google and Facebook. Videocon, a household name across India, couldn't keep pace with newer brands and eventually collapsed.

    On the other side of the ledger: Netflix moved from DVD rentals to streaming to original content production and became a global entertainment powerhouse. Apple kept innovating from personal computers to iPods to iPhones to iPads. Amazon grew from an online bookstore into cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Amul kept adapting to changing Indian consumer preferences decade after decade. Byju's revolutionised education in India through digital learning. Raymond evolved from being just a fabric company to ready-to-wear clothing, staying relevant across generations of Indian customers.

    The pattern is identical whether you're looking at a single engineer's career or a hundred-year-old company: innovate, or become irrelevant.

    Innovation doesn't need to be dramatic: Sumant Moolgaokar's lunch

    It's tempting to think innovation only means reinventing your entire career or your whole business. It doesn't. Sometimes the most powerful innovation is a small, consistent habit that keeps you honest about reality.

    Sumant Moolgaokar is a name every Indian professional should know. He was the Managing Director of Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company — TELCO, now Tata Motors — Vice-Chairman of Tata Steel, and non-executive Chairman of Maruti Suzuki. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1990 for his contribution to Indian industry. But what made him exceptional wasn't the string of titles. It was his openness to ideas from the most unexpected sources.

    Every day, the top executives at Tata Motors ate lunch together in the company cafeteria. Moolgaokar was never among them. He disappeared during lunch and returned only once the break was over. His colleagues were puzzled. Some assumed he didn't want to socialise with them. Others assumed he was having fancy lunches at five-star hotels with Tata's dealers.

    One day, a few curious executives decided to follow him. What they found surprised them completely. Moolgaokar wasn't at any five-star hotel. He was at a nearby dhaba, eating lunch with truck drivers. He wanted their feedback — directly, unfiltered, from the people who drove Tata trucks every single day. He wanted to know what was working, what was breaking down on long hauls, and what could be improved.

    That's innovation in its most practical form: not waiting for feedback to travel up through formal channels and arrive sanitised, but going out and sitting with the people who actually use what you build. Moolgaokar's small, thoughtful habit, repeated over years, helped build Tata Motors into the giant it became. The Tata Sumo — one of India's most iconic SUVs — was even named after him: Su from Sumant, Mo from Moolgaokar. A lunch habit became a legacy.

    Employee A vs Employee B: spotting Innovation in your own team

    When I run workshops on this trait, I ask leaders to compare two profiles they'll recognise instantly.

    Employee A says "we've always done it this way." They reject new ideas without proper evaluation, feel threatened by change, dismiss suggestions from junior team members, wait for someone else to take the lead, believe innovation is only for leadership or R&D, and avoid risks even when they're clearly calculated and worth taking.

    Employee B says "what if we tried it differently?" They welcome new ideas regardless of who suggests them, see change as an opportunity rather than a threat, encourage experimentation and treat failed experiments as data, take the initiative to propose improvements without waiting to be asked, believe everyone — not just leadership — can contribute to innovation, and are willing to take calculated risks for a real breakthrough.

    How to build Innovation deliberately: the TOLOPOSOGO method

    Innovation isn't a personality trait you're born with. It's a skill, and like any skill it responds to a structured method. Edward de Bono, the creative-thinking pioneer, developed exactly this in a five-step framework called TOLOPOSOGO. It gives you a repeatable process instead of waiting for a lightning bolt of inspiration:

    TO — where are we going? Define the end result. What problem are you actually trying to solve, and where do you want to end up? A clear destination keeps your energy focused instead of scattered.

    LO — look at the facts. Collect all the relevant data and look at the situation objectively. Don't cherry-pick the facts that confirm what you already believe — look at the complete picture, including the uncomfortable parts.

    PO — think through the possibilities. This is the creative, idea-generating phase. Come up with options, alternatives, and even provocative ideas. Ask "what if we did this completely differently?" without immediately shooting the idea down.

    SO — so what? Of all the ideas you generated, which ones actually matter? Which are practical, impactful, and worth pursuing right now? This is the filtering step that turns brainstorming into a real plan.

    GO — take action. Implement the best ideas. Innovation without action is just an interesting conversation. The professionals who got left behind in IT weren't short on ideas about what they could learn — they were short on the GO step.

    Alongside TOLOPOSOGO, a few daily habits build the muscle: be open to ideas no matter who suggests them and evaluate on merit, not seniority; actively challenge "we've always done it this way" instead of accepting it as a reason; treat failures as information, the way Thomas Edison treated his ten thousand failed attempts at the light bulb as data rather than defeat; and stay curious — read outside your lane, attend a workshop you wouldn't normally attend, ask a junior colleague to teach you something.
