The loom city on the Tapti

Burhanpur was a textile entrepôt when Mughal caravans carried its cloth, and it never really stopped. Today it is Madhya Pradesh's powerloom capital. Thousands of looms in family-run sheds produce interlinings, greys and workaday fabrics that clothe markets far beyond the state. The trade is organised the way loom towns are: owner-weaver families, master-and-labour arrangements, yarn dealers, and traders whose networks reach Surat and beyond. It is a city of proprietors, and proprietor economies buy training differently. Directly, sceptically, and only when it promises something usable.

Banana money and Asia’s first newsprint

Two more engines run alongside the looms. Burhanpur is the state's banana district, with tens of thousands of hectares under the crop, consignments moving to northern mandis and export markets in the Gulf, and a growing side economy in banana-fibre products. The district's One District One Product identity is built on it. And at Nepanagar stands NEPA, Asia's first newsprint mill, inaugurated in 1956 and still producing. It is a public-sector township whose mill culture shaped the district's industrial workforce for seventy years.

Between looms, bananas and the mill sit the usual organised layer: banks and cooperative networks, schools and colleges, hospitals, mandi traders and transporters on the rail line that links the city straight onto the Mumbai–Delhi trunk.
