Kodo, kutki and the collectives

Dindori's most interesting economic story is also its most local. The district's kodo and kutki, minor millets grown on its Maikal hill farms for generations, have become a recognised market story, driven substantially by women's self-help-group collectives that aggregate, process and sell what used to be subsistence grain. It is a fitting emblem for the district. Predominantly adivasi. Home to Baiga communities whose homeland lies in these hills. Smallholder in its farming, and organised less through companies than through federations, cooperatives, haats and public institutions along the upper Narmada.

The crops are worth naming properly, because the district is now trying to defend them. Kodo and kutki grow here mostly on Baiga and Gond smallholdings, on slopes that suit little else, and Dindori's Nagdaman kutki is a distinct local variety for which the agricultural university at Jabalpur has prepared a geographical-indication case. The Baiga are a particularly vulnerable tribal group whose homeland these hills are, and a district carved out of Mandla around them has always had to build from what the slopes already produced.

Organised employment accordingly sits with the state and the collective. Schools and their teachers. Health and development field teams. Bank branches and correspondent networks, SHG federations, and the small trading economy of Dindori and Shahpura towns.

Sixty-six million years at Ghughwa

Seventy kilometres from the district town, on seventy-five acres at Ghughwa, Dindori keeps a national fossil park. Plant fossils from thirty-one genera across eighteen families, laid down some sixty-six million years ago and left lying in the open as they were found. It is the kind of asset a better-connected district would have built a small economy around. Trained guides. An interpretation centre. School and college field visits. A scheduled stop for travellers who currently drive straight past on the Jabalpur road.

The distance between what this district holds and what it earns from it is the honest frame for everything else. The people who would close that gap are the same people who need capability work. Young men and women who could guide, host and explain. Teachers who could turn a fossil bed into the science lesson their students remember. The collectives and institutions that would have to organise it. None of that begins with a corporate module. It begins with confidence, coordination and the habit of speaking up in front of strangers.
