Coal seams under a sacred source

Anuppur's working economy runs on coal and current. South Eastern Coalfields' collieries in the Kotma–Bijuri belt have mined these seams for generations. The Amarkantak thermal power station at Chachai has generated since the 1970s, and a large private thermal plant at Jaithari joined the grid in the last decade. Around the mines and plants sit the contractors, transporters, workshops and townships that a coal district accumulates, plus the railway lines that exist chiefly to move fuel.

Amarkantak, the district’s other identity

The same district holds Amarkantak, where the Narmada rises. It is a pilgrimage town with a year-round flow of visitors, and since 2007 it has also held the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, a central university that brings students from tribal communities across India to a campus in the hills. Between the temples and the university runs a service economy of lodges, eateries and transport. It gives Anuppur a second, gentler labour market alongside the collieries.

Two very different halls, one district

Training demand here divides along a clean line. On the industrial side: supervisors, section in-charges and contractor teams who need discipline, communication and ownership taught in the blunt, respectful Hindi that a mining workforce accepts. On the institutional side: university students and staff, school teachers, hospital and bank teams who need employability, service behaviour and professional energy.
