Lime kilns, refractories and the works at Kymore

Katni is called the Lime City and has earned the name. The district's limestone has fed a couple of hundred kilns and processing units around the town for decades, and the calcination, hydrated-lime and refractory trade built on them is the reason a district this size carries an industrial register at all. The deeper seams feed cement. The works at Kymore, in Vijayraghavgarh tehsil, has been an integrated cement plant on this limestone for generations, with its own mines, crushers and freight sidings. Bauxite, laterite and dolomite come out of the same ground, and steel-grade limestone, of which Katni is one of only two significant Indian sources, leaves the district for furnaces a long way from here.

Then there is the stone itself. Katni's cut stone, the patterned limestone sold across the country as Katni marble, is the district's one-district-one-product, worked in yards of cutters and polishers whose slabs go into construction, decorative and sculpting markets nationally. The second Katni is a railway town of unusual weight. Katni Junction sits where the Mumbai–Howrah trunk meets the lines from Bina and Prayagraj, and New Katni Junction has run one of West Central Railway's two main marshalling yards since 1961, with a diesel loco shed alongside. Transport and loading firms need coordination discipline and a culture in which a near-miss is reported rather than absorbed. Mineral and stone traders who have grown past the size a proprietor can personally watch need a second line that decides instead of reporting. And the town's own layer of bank branches, education societies, the hospital and the colleges feeding technicians into all of it books the standard institutional days.
