AI for financial controllers can support variance notes, cash reviews and approval packs. See what your team should practise, check and bring to a company workshop.

AI for financial controllers helps draft variance explanations and cash-review notes from checked figures. I’m Avinash Chate, a TEDx speaker who trains corporate teams to use AI with human review. A 2024 Deloitte–nasscom report projected Indian AI talent demand above 1.25 million by 2027, making practical team capability a useful priority.
TL;DRStart with a recurring explanation that follows a stable report: a monthly variance note, a list of unresolved exceptions or a management-pack cover note. Keep calculations in the checked workbook and give the assistant only the approved extracts it needs. I’d ask the controller to choose one output that repeatedly needs rewriting. A successful first exercise produces a clearer draft with traceable figures. It doesn’t give an assistant permission to post journals, change the forecast or release information to management.
Give the assistant three distinct inputs: the checked variance table, approved operational explanations and a list of gaps. Ask it to connect each sentence to a supplied row or note. Where the evidence ends, the draft should say what needs checking. If freight expense moved but nobody has explained why, “higher fuel prices” is an unsupported guess. My AI for finance and accounts training covers checking work against its source. For controllers, that becomes a practical discipline for reviewing every explanation before circulation.
| Practice task | Input to prepare | Approval test |
|---|---|---|
| Variance commentary | Checked actual-versus-budget table and approved notes | Every reason has a source; gaps stay visible |
| Cash-review summary | Sample position, dates and labelled assumptions | Expected receipts stay distinct from confirmed receipts |
| Management-pack cover note | Approved report and exception list | No new figures or unsupported conclusions |
| Action tracker | Confirmed meeting decisions | Owner and due date match the decision record |
Use a cash-review exercise to practise summarising, not predicting with false certainty. Supply an approved position summary, the dates attached to expected receipts and a separate assumptions list. Ask for a draft that distinguishes confirmed information from items awaiting an owner’s update. A promised customer payment must not become cash already received. For the workshop, use fictional counterparties and sample amounts. The controller checks timing and wording against the original schedules before deciding which observations belong in the management discussion.
Build the review around four questions: Is each figure traceable? Is the period correct? Does the explanation have evidence? Is the proposed action actually approved? Keep a visible place for unresolved points and the person responsible for answering them. An attractive summary can hide a missing unit, a reversed comparison or an old version of a table. I’d include deliberate mistakes in a practice pack so participants learn to challenge fluent wording. The controller remains responsible for what leaves the department.
Bring a masked report layout, a sample variance table, a few approved explanatory notes and the company’s rules for AI use. Choose among company-approved tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini according to existing access and IT guidance. Don’t assume that every account has the same permissions or data controls. Keep bank details, payroll information and unpublished results out of workshop samples. Agree who prepares the source, who reviews the draft and where the approved version will be stored.
Ask for a working exercise that mirrors the controller’s review responsibility. Participants should compare the AI draft with its sources, correct unsupported claims and explain their approval decision. My own businesses use more than a dozen AI agents, a CRM built with AI and a Telegram assistant connected to business information; that is operating experience, not a promise of a particular saving for your department. The wider AI training for corporate employees programme can be shaped around the finance team’s actual reporting needs.
Choose the format around the work: a focused session for one reporting output, or a longer workshop with repeated drafting and review. Before booking, share the controller group’s size, current tools, reporting bottleneck, preferred language and location through the corporate training enquiry form. I deliver sessions across India, including Pune, Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Sangli. Compare the pilot with your usual process using draft corrections, unsupported statements and review time. Request an AI training proposal for your team at connect@avinashchate.com or 8793630001.

The first workshop can use masked exports and report layouts alongside your existing system. It need not connect to the ERP. Agree any later integration separately with your IT team and the process owner.
It can draft an explanation from reasons you supply. A variance alone does not establish its cause. The reviewer should reject invented explanations and ask the relevant owner to confirm missing information.
Look for practice on a realistic reporting task, a clear review checklist and an output participants can explain. Compare source accuracy, corrections and review effort before drawing conclusions about productivity.
