AI for manufacturing can start with the SOP binder. See how plant teams draft SOPs in plain Marathi and Hindi that operators follow, and where a person must approve.

AI for manufacturing doesn't have to start with sensors or robots. It can start with the SOP binder: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can draft plant SOPs in simple Marathi and Hindi that operators actually follow. NASSCOM-Deloitte says India needs 1.25 million AI professionals by 2027, but your plant team can learn this practical skill now.
TL;DRMost SOPs are written by engineers in formal English and then filed. Operators learn the job from the person beside them, so the document and the real process drift apart. The problem isn't that people won't read. A page of formal English, or a stiff textbook translation, doesn't sound like the shop floor. AI can help close that gap, but only if a supervisor who knows the real process stays in the loop from start to finish.
Give the AI the real steps, as a voice note transcript or rough bullets from the line supervisor, and ask for numbered steps with one action each, in the words operators use on that line. Ask for Marathi and Hindi separately, and tell it to keep machine and part names the way people actually say them, which is often English. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini handle both languages reasonably well, but they stumble on technical terms, so a bilingual person must read the result.
| Step | What happens | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Walk the process | Supervisor records a voice note or short text of the real steps | Line supervisor |
| 2. Draft | AI writes numbered steps in plain English | Process owner |
| 3. Translate | AI writes Marathi and Hindi in shop floor words | Bilingual supervisor |
| 4. Read-aloud test | Two operators read it and say what is unclear | Operators |
| 5. Safety review | Hazards, PPE and lockout steps checked against your own rules | Safety officer |
| 6. Release | Version, date and approval recorded | Plant or quality head |
The table sets out the workflow I teach. The two parts that matter most are the supervisor's walkthrough at the start and the operators' read-aloud test in the middle. If two operators can't explain a step back in their own words, the step gets rewritten, however good the translation looks. This also builds ownership, because operators see their own language on the page instead of a document written for an auditor.
AI must never be the final word on safety steps, lockout and tagout, chemical handling limits, quality acceptance criteria or statutory requirements. It can write a confident hazard list that misses the one hazard specific to your machine. Your safety and quality heads approve every released SOP against your own rules and your legal obligations. Keep drawings, formulations and customer specifications out of free public tools; use a business plan your IT head has reviewed.
Ask the AI to translate its Marathi back into English, then compare that with your original. The differences show where meaning slipped. Keep a small glossary of the terms your plant uses, with the Marathi and Hindi forms your people prefer, and paste it into every request so the wording stays consistent. Have a supervisor mark any phrase that sounds like a textbook. After a few SOPs the glossary does most of the work and new drafts need fewer corrections.
Once the SOP habit sticks, the same draft-and-approve pattern works for shift handover notes, toolbox talk scripts, quizzes for new operators, downtime reason summaries and supplier query emails. Dashboards can be built by describing what you want to see, then checked by the person who owns the number. None of these tasks involve AI controlling a machine. Yes, as a first draft. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can write Marathi and Hindi steps, but a bilingual supervisor must check technical terms and operators should read the SOP aloud before release.
Use it only as a drafting aid. Your safety officer must verify hazards, PPE and lockout steps against your own rules and legal requirements before any SOP is released.
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot can all draft and translate. Test each one with your own glossary and pick the one your team finds clearest, then standardise on it.
The focus is shop floor documents, local language and approvals, not office email. In every case AI drafts and checks, and a named person approves; nothing here lets AI control a machine.
