Team Dotpreneurs presented Rashmi Bansal's Connect the Dots at HNIMR Pune with nine placards. What the book teaches young Indian founders.

At "Ink and Insights", the book review competition I judged at MKSSS's Smt. Hiraben Nanavati Institute of Management and Research for Women (HNIMR), Karvenagar, Pune, on 29 October 2026, one team walked on stage carrying their whole message in their hands. Team Dotpreneurs presented Connect the Dots by Rashmi Bansal (2010), the book that tells the stories of 20 Indian entrepreneurs who built their businesses without an MBA.
The theme of the day was "Entrepreneurship: From Vision to Venture: Learning Through Books". For a hall full of MBA students, this was a brave and slightly cheeky book to pick, and I loved it for exactly that reason.
Team Dotpreneurs did not need a big screen to make their point. Each member held a white placard with a single word drawn inside a circle: Grit, Scope, Vision, Innovation, Risk, Passion, Teamwork and Off-beat. In the middle stood a larger red circle with the team name, "Dot-preneurs".
Standing in a row, they looked like the dots themselves, waiting to be connected. It was a simple, clever piece of design. You could read the team's whole idea of an entrepreneur from across the hall in a few seconds, and that is a skill every founder needs when pitching.
A small honest note: this part of the day was not recorded, so I will not try to recreate their lines or answers from memory. As with every one of the 21 groups, I questioned the team after their presentation, from my seat in the front row with the microphone, and they answered standing together with their placards. What follows is what the book says and what I believe it teaches a young founder.
Rashmi Bansal had already written Stay Hungry Stay Foolish, about entrepreneurs from IIM Ahmedabad. Connect the Dots is the other side of that coin: 20 people who succeeded with no MBA at all. The title comes from Steve Jobs' famous idea that you can only connect the dots of your life looking backwards.
The book is divided into three sections. Jugaad is about people who found clever, practical ways to build a business with very little. Junoon is about people driven by passion. Zubaan is about creative people who turned their art and expression into a living.
The common thread is that these founders learned by doing, not in classrooms. Many started very small, with very little money. One of the best-known stories is Prem Ganapathy, who came to Mumbai with almost nothing and went on to build Dosa Plaza.
Look at the words the team chose and you can see the book in them. Grit and Risk are the Jugaad stories, people who kept going when there was no safety net. Passion is Junoon. Off-beat and Innovation are Zubaan, the people who did something nobody expected. Vision, Scope and Teamwork are what turn a small start into a real company. The team had read the book and boiled it down to nine words, which is harder than it looks.
This book does not say an MBA is useless. It says an MBA is not the thing that makes you an entrepreneur. If you are doing an MBA, use it well: learn finance, marketing and people management properly. But do not wait for the degree to give you permission to start. Start something small while you study.
The founders in this book learned on the street, in shops and at work. You can do a smaller version today. Sell something on a weekend. Run a small event. Take one freelance project. Every real customer teaches you more than a case study does.
Prem Ganapathy did not begin with a restaurant chain. He began with almost nothing. Ask yourself: what can I start this month with the money, skills and people I already have? That first, smallest step is the one that matters most.
Jugaad, Junoon or Zubaan: practical cleverness, deep passion, or creative expression. Most founders run on one more than the others. Knowing yours helps you choose the right business and the right partners to cover what you lack.
That part-time job, the hobby, the odd course you took for fun: you cannot see today how they fit. In these 20 stories, many of those random dots became the business. So collect experiences generously, and trust that the line will appear when you look back.
If you read Connect the Dots with friends, discuss these. Which entrepreneur in the book had the most unusual path? What skill did these founders learn outside school that you also need? And if you are an MBA student, what is the real value of your degree for starting a business, and what will you still have to learn by doing?
Thank you for the placards. Nine words and one red dot told the whole story, and you stood together as a team while answering. Keep that clarity. The best founders I know can explain their idea in a few words, and then prove it with years of grit.
If you run a college or company: I run book-review competitions, entrepreneurship sessions and leadership workshops for MBA students and working teams across India. If you would like a session like this for your students or your people, write to me here and we can plan it together.
My thanks to Dr. Priyanka Singh, Director of HNIMR; Mrs. Manjushree K. Nawale, Librarian, and her library team, who organised Ink & Insights 2026; Mr. Vishwajeet Deshmukh, Placement Officer; Mr. Devadatta Sant; and Ms. Minal Kotwal, for hosting me so warmly and making the day run so smoothly. And to every student who stood on that stage with a book in hand: thank you for the courage and the creativity.
