Employee retention strategies often miss the family. Haidilao pays managers' parents every month. Here is what Indian companies can learn from it without copying it.

Employee retention strategies work best when they reach the family, because people do not come to work alone. A manager who sends money home on the first of every month is not deciding about a job, but about a household. 65% of Indian firms invest in soft-skill training, yet few ask what their people carry home. Here is one company that did.
TL;DRIn my office visits I have seen the same picture many times. A young employee works 1,000 km from home, lives in a small rented room, and sends money to the village on the first of every month. The company does not know. His mother is unwell, but the target comes first. Diwali is near, but leave is not approved. Then the same company asks why people do not stay. Salary and growth matter, but when the workplace ignores real life, the employee starts looking for one that does not.
Haidilao is a restaurant chain in China with more than 1,400 outlets. Most of its employees come from villages. The company made a rule: when an employee becomes a manager, it sends a monthly amount straight to the parents' bank account. The better the manager performs, the higher the parents' payment goes. In villages where parents have no pension, this is steady money. I use the name Parents Payroll for it, and I describe it here as it was told in my video, not as a policy you can verify from a company document.
Look at what changes at home. When the manager says he wants to quit, the parents are the ones who say, do not leave, our payment will stop too. The family now has a reason to want the employee to stay and do well. As I said in the video: जो कंपनी सिर्फ एम्प्लॉई को देखती है, उसे एम्प्लॉई मिलता है। जो उसके परिवार को देखती है, उसे पूरा परिवार मिलता है। (A company that sees only the employee gets an employee. A company that sees the family gets the whole family.)
| Idea | Effort | What it tells the employee |
|---|---|---|
| Ask about family in the first week | Low | We see you as a person |
| Festival leave planned early | Low | Home matters here |
| Thank-you note to parents on anniversary | Low | Your family is part of your success |
| Emergency medical support fund | Medium | We will stand by you in a crisis |
| Health insurance cover for parents | Medium to high | Your parents are looked after |
| Direct payment to parents (Haidilao style) | High | Your family shares in your growth |
Most Indian companies cannot pay parents directly, and you do not have to. Start smaller. Ask new joiners in the first week about who depends on them, with their consent. Invite parents to a family day or send a thank-you note home on a work anniversary. Offer a medical emergency support fund, or help with health insurance for parents. Each of these tells the employee that you see the person behind the ID card. If you want help designing this for your teams, see our corporate trainings.
Leave is where trust is won or lost. Plan festival leave early, and let people in distant postings pick their dates first in rotation. Give managers a clear way to approve emergency leave without calling three levels up. When a parent falls ill, a call from the manager and a little flexibility are remembered for years. Write these rules down so they do not depend on one kind boss. Keep the target conversation separate from the emergency conversation.
Retention is mostly decided by the immediate manager. Managers need practice in asking about life outside work, handling a resignation conversation, and spotting early signs of disengagement. That is what I work on with company teams through motivational speaking sessions and manager programmes. Ask yourself the question I asked in the video: when did your company last ask about your employees' families? Tell me in the comments, or reach out through the contact page.

It is my name for a policy described at Haidilao, a Chinese restaurant chain. When an employee becomes a manager, the company pays a monthly amount into the parents' account, and it rises with the manager's performance.
It is possible in principle, but it needs HR, finance and legal review, including tax treatment. Most companies start with lower-effort steps such as parent insurance, family days and emergency support.
Know each person's situation, plan leave early, hold regular one-to-ones, recognise work in front of the team, and act fast on family emergencies. The manager's habits matter more than any single policy.
Salary is only one part. Employees leave when the workplace ignores their family duties, refuses reasonable leave, or treats them as numbers. Many live far from home and support relatives every month.
